About
Ben Pearce
I'm a luthier and designer in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where I run ViolinArching.com and Outlier Workshop. I'm an architect by training and a lifelong student of drawing, and I've always been drawn to representing organic forms in the abstract. I've spent many years studying violin arching and its documentation, reconciling traditional drawings with modern methods such as CT scans and 3D point clouds. From that work I produce moulds, plates, and templates for violin makers around the world.
I don't believe musical instruments are magical objects. They're the result of disciplined process, careful material selection, and geometry. That outlook has made me a resource for dozens of independent violin makers internationally, and for builders at every scale, from Bourgeois Guitars to Eastman Strings, one of the world's largest instrument manufacturers.
After studying at the Rhode Island School of Design, I spent six years apprenticed to violin maker Karl Dennis, learning the methods of the classical Italian makers. Today I adapt industrial tools to the workbench without losing the character of handwork.
I'm an active mandolinist and teacher. Away from the bench, you'll find me fabricating staircase parts and custom millwork, or playing with my daughter, Meryl.
